The 2021 Labor 40 Under 40

Samantha Hom It’s no secret that construction work has long been a male-dominated industry. Erik Antokal is striving to change that.  “You have 50% of the population that has essentially been historically excluded from that incredible opportunity – what an untapped resource,” Antokal says. After graduating from Tufts University in 2012, Antokal completed a fellowship with the Coro New York Leadership Center, where he was able to work with the United Federation of Teachers and 32BJ SEIU, the politically powerful property service workers union. Prior to joining Nontraditional Employment for Women, Antokal also worked for the New York City Department of Small Business Services, where he helped coordinate the city’s business improvement districts.

In 2018, after the nurses at Albany Med, by an overwhelming vote, approved union representation by the New York State Nurses Association, management adopted the tactic that many unscrupulous employers use to destroy a fledgling union: endless stalling in negotiations over a first contract. In response to management’s dilatory negotiating behavior, the nurses and their community supporters have staged numerous rallies, picketed, held press conferences, posted lawn signs and distributed

N Y State Senate Approves Package Of Bills Related To Nursing Homes

Pete Dzintars / Flickr New York state could require nursing homes to spend a certain amount of their revenue on direct patient care, mandate transparent reporting of COVID-19 deaths of residents at those facilities and more under a package of bills passed by the State Senate Monday. The legislation is the result of a pair of public hearings on the state’s handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes last summer, coupled with new revelations about the Cuomo administration. Democrats, who control both chambers of the state Legislature, had already teed up the package of bills for passage a few weeks ago, but new information about the state’s decisions related to nursing homes has fueled that fire in recent days.

Lynn Schulman Gets Party Nod In Packed Forest Hills Council Race

Reply Lynn Schulman (Courtesy of the campaign) FOREST HILLS, QUEENS The Queens County Democratic Party and the J.F.K. Regular Democratic Club this week endorsed Lynn Schulman in the crowded race to represent Forest Hills, Rego Park, Kew Gardens and Richmond Hill in the New York City Council. The endorsements give Schulman s campaign an added boost as she competes against 11 other candidates who have so far registered to run for the seat, currently held by the term-limited City Council Member Karen Koslowitz, who leaves office at the end of this year. Our grassroots campaign is building a robust and diverse coalition for change, Schulman told Patch. I welcome the support of the Queens County Democrats and the JFK Democratic Club because we need to be united as we confront the challenges we face in health care, income inequality, and racial justice.
