Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the New York State Public Service Commission approved a 93-mile 345-kilovolt (kV) transmission line starting in Oneida County and extending to Albany County to enable greater flow of clean energy as part of the 2021 State of the State. The nearly $854M project, named the Marcy to New Scotland Upgrade Project, is designed to speed the flow of clean, reliable electricity to high-demand markets downstate. The initiative also increases transmission capacity to move power more efficiently in keeping with the goals of both the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and the Accelerated Renewable Energy Growth and Community Benefit Act to lower carbon emissions and combat climate change. EAST HAMPTON, NY After years of discussion and deliberation, the East Hampton town board, in a majority vote, approved two agreements with South Fork Wind, LLC, advancing a proposal to build a 15-turbine wind farm in federal waters 30 miles east of Montauk Point.
In his State of the State last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said as New Yorkers focus on reconstruction after waging a battle against the coronavirus, the focus is on a green economy. And on Long Island, those plans include the two largest offshore wind projects in the nation, 60 miles offshore from Montauk and 20 miles off Jones Beach, Cuomo said. Training for new, green jobs is slated to take place right on Long Island, Cuomo added.

Gary Sutherland of Hydro Quebec wrote a Dec. 3, 2020 letter [“We need bold moves now in fighting the climate emergency”] in response to my Nov. 25 letter [“Keep the wealth of New York in the state].
In his Dec. 3 letter, Mr. Sutherland wrote, “CHPE will bring a significant amount of low-carbon energy right into downstate New York.”
This is Mr. Sutherland’s third letter in recent months, and the first time he acknowledged Canadian hydroelectricity has a carbon impact.
The Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) is a proposed one-billion watt, high-voltage, direct-current-transmission corridor (powerlines) that would cross eastern New York from the Canadian border to New York City. Much of it would be buried in trenches under Lake Champlain and the Hudson, Harlem, and East rivers.
