Decades before Sidney Powell joined President Donald Trump’s “elite strike force team” of lawyers alleging voter fraud without evidence, the lawyer made her name in Texas legal circles.
She rose to national prominence in her battle to overturn the 2020 presidential election results, alleging voter fraud at the hand of election companies, including far-reaching conspiracy theories. In one press conference with Trump’s lawyer and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Powell claimed that Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, who died in 2013, directed Dominion voting machines to take votes from Trump and flip them to President-elect Joe Biden.

Nine weeks and another impeachment later, Trump began Friday by asking aides to erase any sign of a rift. Stripped of his Twitter account, Trump conveyed his praise through an adviser, Jason Miller, who tweeted: Just spoke with President Trump, and he told me that @RudyGiuliani is a great guy and a Patriot who devoted his service

In the days following the insurrection at the Capitol, the consequences were relatively swift. Hundreds of rioters were rounded up by law enforcement, and within a week the president was impeached for a second time. But a deeper form of accountability was also taking hold, in the form of social and professional censure.
The Trump Organization has lost contracts and vendors. Key inciters like Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Josh Hawley (R-MO) may lose their legal and educational credentials. House Republicans who voted to object to the election results have also been shunned. Corporate donations to those held responsible have all but stopped. Those with ties to sedition are being ushered out of polite society.
