Mark Cuban: NBA Play-In Tournament a Mistake, As Mavs Chase Playoffs

Jim Davis/The Boston Globe/Getty Images Mavs owner Mark Cuban said the play-in tournament to determine the 7th and 8th seeds is a mistake. The Mavs are currently in 7th place and on track to play in the tournament. The play-in tournament allows for more teams to play more meaningful games late in the season. If the NBA regular season ended today, the Dallas Mavericks would be the 7th seed in the Western Conference and play in the new playoffs play-in tournament. The play-in tournament will determine the final two spots in the playoffs in each conference. The 7th and 8th seeds will play each other first, with the winner clinching the 7th seed. The loser of the 7-8 matchup would then play the winner between the 9th and 10th seeds to determine the final playoff spot.

Lakers news: LeBron James, Anthony Davis return date, per Jared Dudley

April 8, 2021 Since revising their timetable for Anthony Davis’ return from a right calf strain on multiple occasions, the Los Angeles Lakers haven’t gone into much detail on when AD and LeBron James (high ankle sprain) will return to the floor. Frank Vogel and the team have stuck to ruling out James “indefinitely” and providing sparse details on his recovery. They’ve held off on pinpointing a target return date for Davis. So, leave it to their outspoken and wonderfully media-friendly teammate, Jared Dudley, to provide the most detailed update yet on Davis’ progress, via Spectrum’s LakeShow Podcast. “AD is coming along, he’s on the court and doing definitely his little workouts, his calves. I’m in the weight room with him. He’s gonna be getting on the floor more this week, he’s gonna do about 30 minutes non-stop. He’s gonna get to playing here shortly and so give him a couple more weeks.”

Lakers rumors: When LeBron James, Anthony Davis might return

April 7, 2021 At this point, if you’re expecting the Los Angeles Lakers to speed up the timetable for Anthony Davis or LeBron James to return to the court: don’t hold your breath. According to The New York Times’ Marc Stein, the Lakers could be without Davis for at least another week, and likely longer. Here’s what Stein wrote: “Davis has missed the past 23 games because of persistent Achilles’ tendon discomfort and an adjacent calf strain. There is some hope within the organization that he will return to the lineup after the Lakers’ five-game Eastern Conference swing underway, but any injury that involves the Achilles’ tendon, no matter how purportedly mild, is going to spook people until Davis gets back on the floor. Achilles’ tendon injuries remain the most feared in the sport.”
