Credit.Johnhalpern.co.uk Feb. 1, 2021 If you’ve always dreamed of learning how to make cryptic crosswords (or to “set” or “compose” them, as our fellow puzzle lovers say in the U.K.), John Halpern, one of Britain’s most prolific and popular cryptic composers, will reveal the magic behind those twisted clues, along with New York Times Crossword editor Will Shortz. Mr. Halpern will compose a cryptic crossword live, from start to finish, in the virtual event, which takes place Feb. 5 from 7-9 p.m. Eastern. Mr. Shortz will join in, adding commentary on what The New York Times looks for in its cryptics.
