Media reports say that the Cleveland Indians will announce this week plans to change the team s name. Sources began confirming the news to outlets including the New York Times Sunday night. The club has come under varying degrees of fire in recent years with critics calling its name insensitive and racist towards people of Native American heritage.
In the last couple of seasons, the team has phased out the use of its long-beloved logo Chief Wahoo. Now, it seems, the club name will go as well. It remains to be seen if Cleveland will drop the Indians name immediately or if it will move to a new name following the 2021 season.
