Mar 17, 2021 2:01 PM New Smyrna Beach, FL - An attempted burglary suspect is also charged with resisting arrest with violence and battery on an officer, on top of multiple other charges, after fighting with law enforcement during his arrest. A report from the New Smyrna Beach Police Department (NSBPD) says officers were called to a Dairy Queen off of North Dixie Freeway just after 2:30 Tuesday morning (March 16th). The report states that police were called after someone heard glass breaking and an alarm going off from the area of the store. As officers were responding to the call, a Volusia County deputy notified dispatch that he was in contact with someone just a block south of the Dairy Queen. When an NSBPD officer arrived to meet with the deputy and the male, the male asked if he could speak to a supervisor, to which the NSB officer replied that he was the on-duty supervisor and that law enforcement was investigating a break-in that had occurred just up the street. An off-duty Daytona Beach police officer was arrested for stabbing a man during a fight outside a bar in New Smyrna Beach on Wednesday night, officials said.
The officer was identified as Shane P. Jackson, 50. He was initially charged with aggravated battery but after police reviewed video footage of the fight the charge was amended to attempted premeditated murder, said New Smyrna Beach police spokesman Lt. Christopher Kirk.
Daytona Beach police Chief Jakari Young said initially Thursday that he had placed Jackson on unpaid administrative leave until the investigation of the incident is completed. But later the chief released another statement saying he had seen some of the evidence.
