MANCHESTER â Rola Ayoub gave a small fist pump Sunday afternoon after a Salvation Army volunteer dug up a small blue stuffed elephant out of a box for her 15-month-old son.
âI know it will make his face light up,â she said. âI know it will make him happy.â
On Sunday, the Manchester mom was among hundreds who received toys for children under 13 at the Salvation Armyâs annual Toy Shop, set up at the Expo Center at the DoubleTree hotel. The event is supported by the New Hampshire Union Leader Santa Fund for the Salvation Army.
The toy pickup was to span two days as part of COVID-19 precautions to spread out the nearly 1,200 families.

State Democratic Party Chair Raymond Buckley has not yet said if he will seek an eighth term to lead the party, but it would send shock waves through New Hampshire politics and in Democratic circles nationally if he does not. Download the FREE WMUR appIf Buckley does run, he will have an opponent for only the second time of his chairmanship following the announcement Tuesday by Somersworth business owner and community leader Emmett Soldati. CONCORD â A leader of a special-interest group exploited a loophole in New Hampshireâs campaign finance law to create 11 political action committees which donated nearly $100,000 to 10 Republican state Senate candidates during the 2020 election.
A New Hampshire Union Leader investigation found that a representative of New England Citizens for Right to Work gave similarly themed names to the different PACs, which enabled the groupâs supporters to collectively give their preferred candidates at least eight times what a single PAC could.
Such an effort is not specifically prohibited under state law.
Eight of the 10 candidates backed by the PACs won on Nov. 3.

IN OUR NATURE TALKS of Nov. 6, we quoted from a Plymouth reader who described âodd-looking squirrelsâ as: âThey are brown and rather ugly, with long bodies, even longer, non-bushy tails and their hind legs are taller than the grays. The brown ugly squirrels and the reds seem to get along fine . and the brown squirrel population is not diminishing in numbers. They âslinkâ along the ground, lay out flat many times with all four limbs outstretched, and when two are on the lawn, they play together as a couple of kittens would. They jump from a stationary position up into the air, feet straight, come down and pounce on the other squirrel, tumble and roll, more jumping, etc. Quite a show! I hope you can enlighten us on this brown squirrel that now seems to be growing in numbers, unfortunately.â
