(WECT) - New Hanover County Schools (NHCS) has come a long way in its efforts to effectively deal with sexual assault, and it’s letting the public know about it. NHCS formed a Title IX committee in the Spring of 2019, in the wake of public outcry over the sexual assault of students by their teachers that spanned over the course of decades. Parents and victims complained of systemic issues that allowed the abuse to continue for years after they say it could have and should have been stopped.

Listen to the story here.   At Tuesday night’s New Hanover County School Board meeting, the announcement came that school staff will be vaccinated in Phase 1B. There were also concerns from some community members about the impending elementary reopening. There were twenty ‘Calls to the Audience’, from community members who shared public comments with the board. And most asked officials to reconsider their decision to fully reopen pre-K through elementary schools on January 19th. Some also mentioned recent fatalities from Covid-19 among educators and asked for documentation on the county’s risk assessment for reopening.  Kaleigh Pare is a sixth-grade social studies teacher at the International School at Gregory and a member of the New Hanover County Association of Educators.

(WECT) - It’s been more than 10 months since the New Hanover County School Board voted to approve an agreement allowing former Superintendent Tim Markley to resign - granting him more than $200,000 worth of benefits. Markley faced criticism from many in the community after multiple teachers were arrested and charged with sex crimes against students in a two-year span. The agreement to pay Markley $195,000 in severance along with $32,966.66 in benefits caused some residents to question the actions of the board.
