The New Hanover County school system has faced an uphill battle when it comes to sexual offense cases between students and school staff members.
In 2019, Michael Earl Kelly pleaded guilty to 59 charges of child sexual abuse after he d abused nearly 20 victims during his years as a science teacher at Isaac Bear Early College High School.
Last year, the New Hanover County Board of Education fired Roland-Grise Middle School band director Peter Michael Frank after he was charged with 12 felony sex crimes. He was later indicted on an additional 17 sex crime charges that included sex offenses with a child aged 13-15 between 1998 and 2000.

David Bostian was found dead after he shot himself Friday morning at his home at 3304 Tipton Court in Wilmington. This followed public allegations made against him about having an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old student in 1992.

The Wilmington Police Department have confirmed that David Bostian, Jr. was found dead at his residence this morning by officers responding to a 911 call.
The cause of death is still under investigation and is not being called a homicide investigation at this time but no further details have yet been released; according to WPD, more information will be provided once a thorough investigation is completed.
Earlier this morning, Bostian was arrested by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. He is charged with two counts of sexual offense by a government employee; according to the Sheriff’s Office, a female victim reported to law enforcement that the offenses allegedly took place in 1992, when she was a 16-year-old student at New Hanover High School.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY – On Friday morning, the vice principal of Noble Middle School resigned from his position upon facing two charges for sexual offenses.
New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department reported that David Eugene Bostian, 59, was accused of having a years-long relationship with a former student in the early ’90s. After the alleged victim filed a report, Bostian was served warrants, arrested at the Detective Division and given a $150,000 unsecured bond. He was later released.
At 9:05 a.m., Wilmington police responded to a 911 call at his home at Tipton Court. He was found dead.
