With many North Carolina teachers still weeks, if not months, away from receiving COVID-19 vaccines, a few districts have already helped give shots to hundreds of staff members.
On Friday, Jackson County Public Schools in Western North Carolina dismissed students early so staff could get vaccinated. Since last week, public school employees in Rutherford County, Swain County, and Union County received their first vaccine doses as well. In the Triad, Davie County Schools will make shots available to employees on Wednesday.

His alleged crimes included multiple counts of indecent liberties with children and students â and he was not the first teacher to be accused of sexual assault against students at New Hanover County.
In fact, Frank was the third employee to be arrested for sex crimes against students in a two-year period.
Frank has been accused of sex crimes dating back as far as 1999 and as recent as 2019.

A young life cut short. A parent s worst nightmare. Families torn apart.
It s a scenario that played out again and again in the Wilmington area in 2020. With 22 homicides last year, the most in recent memory, violent deaths in New Hanover County have been trending in the wrong direction. Half of those killed last year were 35 or younger, and 18 of the 22 victims died after being shot. These statistics, of course, don t count those who were shot and survived.
Now, a locally made short film designed to get area youth to think before they act is trying to reverse that trend. Stop the Killing from Wilmington filmmakers Nakia Hamilton and Jay James produced in association with the Wilmington Police Department, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, New Hanover County Schools and other area groups was posted to YouTube on New Year s Eve.

NHCS expands sexual assault training for students and teachers, hires investigator By Ann McAdams | January 21, 2021 at 3:03 PM EST - Updated January 21 at 4:25 PM
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - New Hanover County Schools (NHCS) has come a long way in its efforts to effectively deal with sexual assault, and itâs letting the public know about it.
NHCS formed a Title IX committee in the Spring of 2019, in the wake of public outcry over the sexual assault of students by their teachers that spanned over the course of decades. Parents and victims complained of systemic issues that allowed the abuse to continue for years after they say it could have and should have been stopped.
