A young life cut short. A parent s worst nightmare. Families torn apart.
It s a scenario that played out again and again in the Wilmington area in 2020. With 22 homicides last year, the most in recent memory, violent deaths in New Hanover County have been trending in the wrong direction. Half of those killed last year were 35 or younger, and 18 of the 22 victims died after being shot. These statistics, of course, don t count those who were shot and survived.
Now, a locally made short film designed to get area youth to think before they act is trying to reverse that trend. Stop the Killing from Wilmington filmmakers Nakia Hamilton and Jay James produced in association with the Wilmington Police Department, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, New Hanover County Schools and other area groups was posted to YouTube on New Year s Eve.
New Hanover Regional Medical Center said Thursday afternoon it now has appointments for vaccines.
Update: NHRMC has run out of appointments. The 1,200 slots were filled in less than 40 minutes.
Spokesperson Julian March said NHRMC is working to obtain more vaccines.
“So we can set up more appointments for next week – and every week – until we have offered a vaccine to everyone,” March said. “Already, we have administered more than 13,000 doses, including doses to healthcare workers, providers and members of the community.”
NEW HANOVER COUNTY – New Hanover Regional Medical Center has opened more appointments for its current supply of Covid-19 vaccines.
Wave Transit will offer door-to-door transportation service to individuals 65 and older needing a ride to get a Covid-19 vaccine. Once more groups are…

NEW HANOVER COUNTY North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein will not object to Novant Health’s $1.5 billion purchase of the publicly owned New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
After a three-month legally required review of the proposed asset purchase agreement and the addition of certain new negotiated conditions, Stein announced Thursday the parties have agreed to increase the transparency of the endowment bestowed with $1.25 billion in sale proceeds.
The endowment’s “representativeness” and independence of its board of directors has also been improved, according to Stein’s announcement.
The Wilmington Police Department s stabbing investigation from earlier this week has hit a roadblock.
Police responded to the 800 block of Colonial Drive in Wilmington just before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday after a 28-year-old man was knocking on doors asking for someone to call 911, according to a press release from the department.
The man, 28-year-old Garrett Lee Land, is expected to make a full recovery. However, Land has refused to cooperate with the police department due to the incident being drug-related, according to police.
Public Affairs Officer Jessica Williams said the department is actively investigating the drug transaction now. Due to the ongoing investigation additional details, including any potential charges that may be filed against Land or others, are not being released at this time.
