Two passengers including a woman died and 29 others were injured after an omni bus rammed a paddy harvesting vehicle on the Tiruchi-Pudukottai national highway at Bommadimalai near Keeranur, early on Sunday. The deceased were identified as A. Saranya (26) of Ramanathapuram and C. Venkatesh (23) of Tirunelveli.
The bus was on its way to Rameswaram from Chennai when it overtook a lorry and collided head-on with the paddy harvesting vehicle that was oncoming in the opposite direction at around 3 a.m.. The bus overturned a few metres away from the spot in the impact of the collision, said police sources. Senior police officers rushed to the spot and rescued the passengers caught inside the vehicle.

The death sentence awarded by Pudukottai Mahila Court to a 34-year-old man from Gujarat for the sexual assault and murder of an intellectually disabled 17-year-old boy was referred to the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday, for confirmation of the sentence. The incident took place in December 2019.
A Division Bench of Justices K. Kalyanasundaram and G. Ilangovan ordered notice to the State in the referred trial and adjourned the hearing. The 34-year-old man Thanish Patel, a heavy vehicle operator in a private crusher unit near Kolathur, had kidnapped the boy and sexually assaulted him. The boy suffered grievous injuries due to the assault.
Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar on Wednesday laid the foundation for a satellite town at Mullur in Pudukottai panchayat union. The Tamil Nadu Housing Board will establish it at a cost of ₹ 56.31 crore

Central region sees 63 new cases and one death

The central region on Monday reported 63 new cases of COVID-19. One death was reported in the region,in Pudukottai.
A 65-year-old man from Pudukottai with a history of diabetes, coronary artery disease and acute respiratory failure succumbed to COVID-19 at the Pudukottai Medical College Hospital.
Thanjavur reported 20 fresh cases for the viral infection while the other seven districts in the central region reported less than 15 cases.
A total of 13 patients tested positive in Tiruvarur, while in Tiruchi, 11 fresh cases were reported. Among them were local index cases with no travel or contact history or asymptomatic patients. Ten patients who were undergoing treatment at the Tiruchi Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital were discharged after recovering from the viral infection on Monday.
