Renewable Feed, New Technology and C2C Strategies Offer Opportunities for Refiners - Chemical Engineering

Renewable Feed, New Technology and C2C Strategies Offer Opportunities for Refiners The TBEC series has been added to this company’s range… By Scott Jenkins | May 1, 2021 After a rough past year, petroleum refineries are seeking profit opportunities through the use of renewable feedstocks, such as vegetable oils and waste fats, as well as with new alkylation technologies and by increasing “crude-to-chemicals” (C2C) approaches The past 18 months have generally been extraordinarily challenging for the world’s petroleum refineries, as pandemic-related restrictions dramatically reduced demand for refinery products and cut refinery utilization rates. Even with demand for transportation fuels returning as the world economy begins to emerge from the pandemic, long-term growth in gasoline and diesel fuel demand is not expected. Flat fuel demand growth, coupled with a broader trend toward decarbonizing the energy sector and increasing investment tied to environmental, social an

EBA comments on adoption of the EU Taxonomy by European Commission

Advertisement The European Biogas Association (EBA) has welcomed the adoption of the EU Taxonomy yesterday by the European Commission as a means to channel investments towards sustainable activities across the EU. The decision to label the production of biogas from anaerobic digestion (AD) as a low-carbon activity recognises its valuable contribution to climate-neutrality, even though the chosen criteria are not fully aligned with the Renewable Energy Directive (RED). Biogas production enables greenhouse gas emissions savings in agriculture and waste management, as acknowledged by the Methane Strategy released last October. The regulation also supports the role of biogas and biomethane in providing renewable heat and power and recognises the need to integrate ‘low-carbon gases’, including biomethane, in existing natural gas grids. This sends a positive signal to investors and operators across the whole energy value chain for further deployment of biogas and biomethane in the co

EU considers applying green jet fuel mandate to all departing flights

This article is part of our special report Sustainable aviation fuels. The European Commission has confirmed that the upcoming ReFuelEU Aviation initiative will impose a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blending mandate, with the EU executive suggesting it will apply to all flights taking off from European airports, regardless of whether their destination is inside the bloc. “We want to have maximum impact. Obviously, in order to do that, we should probably not limit ourselves to internal flights, but rather to all flights that depart from European airports,” said Filip Cornelis, director of aviation with the European Commission’s transport directorate.
