The hacking of the Colonial Pipeline showed Americans the vulnerability of our energy supply, and how much we depend on it to power our economy. Stretching from Texas to New York, Colonial transports 45 percent of the East Coast’s fuel supply, carrying gasoline, heating oil, diesel and jet fuel. The pipeline services one of America’s most populated corridors, delivering more than 100 million gallons of refined fuels each day. So when a cyberattack shut the pipeline down — bringing fuel transportation to a halt and causing gas prices to climb — it was a stark reminder that we need to protect and support the regional diversity of our nation’s refining capacity.

In Iowa, Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a member of both the Senate Agriculture and Environment and Public Works Committees, is continuing her work for Iowa’s farmers and biofuel producers by helping to introduce bipartisan legislation to bring more transparency and predictability to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) small refinery exemption process. The bill would require small refineries to petition for Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) hardship exemptions by June 1st of each year, a change that ensures EPA properly accounts for exempted gallons in the annual Renewable Volume Obligations (RVO) it sets each November.
