Politicians and even some of us found ourselves in the draconian position weighing the scales of working for a paycheck against contracting Covid-19.

Consumer spending, the engine of the market, has nearly lifted the U.S. economy out of the COVID hole of the spring months and a resurgent fall and early winter. An anticipated return to government assistance is helping fuel consumer spending before it starts to stutter again. A part of that aid package may be some assistance to agricultural producers.
In Florida, the 2021 rankings for the 50 Hottest Organizations in Biodesign & Engineering was published today, as voted by invited international Selectors and subscribers of The Daily Digest, the world’s most widely-read bioeconomy daily, and part of the overall 50 Hottest Companies in the Advanced Bioeconomy rankings.
The annual rankings recognize innovation and achievement in fuel, chemicals, materials, advanced foods, genetics, advanced biological and process engineering and integrated biorefinery development, and were first awarded in 2008. The Hot 50 in Agriculture & Nutrition was announced in the Daily Digest on December 31st, and the Hot 50 in Renewable Fuels, Chemicals & Materials was announced on December 30th.

One theme that stood out was fresh faces and young companies only 7 of the Hot 50 had been founded prior to the establishment of the Hot 50 rankings in 2008. 17 of the companies were exclusively focused on advanced foods particularly vegan protein.

One theme that stood out was deployment at commercial-scale. 9 of the top 10 had reached full commercial-scale, and 38 of the overall Hot 50 have reached commercial-scale or were supporting commercial-scale projects with services.
“After years of waiting, the Advanced Bioeconomy has arrived,” said Digest editor and publisher Jim Lane. “Clearly voters have focused on companies that have proven themselves at scale in many cases, with multiple commercial plants.
