Wind energy provided 36% of our electricity last year

Wind energy provided more than 36% of the country s electricity last year, according to Wind Energy Ireland. Its annual report published today, reveals that output increased from 32.5% in 2019 - making Ireland number one in the world for the share of electricity demand met by onshore wind. While wind energy outperformed gas in the first and last quarter of 2020, Wind Energy Ireland said concerns are growing in relation to the rising amounts of lost energy. Their figures show that in 2020 this amounted to more than 1.4 million MWh of electricity, nearly double the figure for 2019. This is just under 11.5% of total production and enough to power more than 300,000 homes

EMPower-linked firm plans €54 9m wind farm

An Irish wind energy developer linked to EMPower has plans to develop a €54.9m wind farm in Shronowen, Co Kerry, a project which could create more than 100 new jobs. Shronowen Wind Farm Limited posted its intention to apply for 10-year planning permission to An Bord Pleanála last week. Shronowen Wind Farm Limited shares directors with EMPower and has a website hosted by the company. According to the website, Shronowen wind farm will involve a €54.9m investment in Irish renewable energy. Direct corporate tax earnings for the Irish Government are estimated to exceed €21.7m over the project lifetime, and may contribute €9.1m in county council rates.

Peter Sweetman whose previous objections include the proposals for a sea wall at US President Donald Trump’s Doonbeg golf resort claims the purpose of the licence for site investigation works is to expand the current Arklow Bank Wind Park site from seven up to as many as 200 offshore wind turbines.

Offaly wind farm sale part of multi-million Euro deal Reporter: );   ); An Offaly wind farm has been included in a sale deal between Statkraft and Greencoat Renewable. Statkraft has decided to construct Cloghan wind farm in Offaly and Taghart wind farm in Cavan before then selling them to Greencoat Renewables PLC. Statkraft will retain responsibility for the construction and the long-term operation and management of the projects, in line with Statkraft’s strategy to build, sell, operate and trade power. Construction will commence in early 2021. Statkraft will manage the construction of both wind farms and will provide operational management services for the wind farms in the operations phase. The ownership of the assets will be transferred to Greencoat Renewables PLC when they become operational in 2022. The total value of the project, including construction costs, is €123 million.
