A major “repowering” to begin soon at an Oklahoma wind farm will increase the facility’s capacity for producing energy and also its life span.
EDP Renewables North America will begin the project at the Blue Canyon II Wind Farm in Caddo and Kiowa counties in June, the company said in a release. The work is anticipated to result in an annual increase in power production of more than 30% and will extend the sprawling facility’s life by an additional 20 to 30 years.
Blue Canyon II already has been operational for more than 15 years, EDPR said.
Work to repower 73 of Blue Canyon II’s 84 turbines is expected to continue through much of the remainder of the year. Nacelles, blades and the top tower sections of each turbine all will be replaced. The turbines also will be upgraded from V80 1.8-megawatt machines to V110 2-MW machines. That’s expected to increase the overall power generating capacity of the wind farm from 151.2 MW to 164 MW.

The new wind farm is located 20 miles south of Seibert, Colo., within Kit Carson and Cheyenne counties, and is within the service territory of Tri-State member K.C. Electric Association.
Crossing Trails, which was developed and constructed, and is owned and operated by EDPR NA, consists of 20 Vestas V150 4.3 MW and five Vestas V136 3.6 MW wind turbines . Crossing Trails will produce enough electricity to annually power the equivalent of approximately 45,000 average Colorado homes.
With blades stretching more than 240 feet, the 4.3 MW wind turbines are among the largest and most advanced turbines installed in Colorado to-date and boast increased efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Some of the various components of these wind turbines were constructed at in-state Vestas facilities and within Tri-State member cooperatives ’ service territories, including Poudre Valley REA, United Power, and San Isabel Electric Association.
