A landing on Mars is almost magical: Northern Ireland space expert

Nasa s Mars landing has been hailed as an extraordinary technological achievement and something akin to magic by Northern Ireland experts. Its science rover Perseverance, the most advanced astrobiology laboratory ever sent to another planet, streaked through the Martian atmosphere on Thursday and landed safely on the floor of a vast crater. Its mission is to search for signs of ancient life, and explore and collect samples for future return to Earth from diverse environments on Mars. Perseverance has since sent back images, which has prompted the space agency to describe it as an amazing accomplishment . Professor Michael Burton, director of Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, told the Belfast Telegraph: Watching the landing, live on NASA TV, of a spacecraft on another planet was an absolutely amazing experience.

Share The largest, most advanced rover NASA has sent to another world touched down on Mars Thursday, after a 203-day journey traversing 293 million miles (472 million kilometers). Confirmation of the successful touchdown was announced in mission control at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California at 3:55 p.m. EST (12:55 p.m. PST).   Packed with groundbreaking technology, the Mars 2020 mission launched July 30, 2020, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The Perseverance rover mission marks an ambitious first step in the effort to collect Mars samples and return them to Earth.   “This landing is one of those pivotal moments for NASA, the United States, and space exploration globally – when we know we are on the cusp of discovery and sharpening our pencils, so to speak, to rewrite the textbooks,” said acting NASA Administrator Steve Jurczyk. “The Mars 2020 Perseverance mission embodies our nation’s spirit of persevering even in the mo

Mars rover Perseverance sends first color photos from planet surface

Florida Today After a seven-month, 300-million-mile journey to the Red Planet, NASA s Perseverance rover has sent back the first high-definition color pictures of Mars, including a selfie. On Friday, NASA released a photo of the rover in mid-descent as it was suspended under the sky crane moments before it touched down on the Martian surface. “This is something that we’ve never seen before. It was stunning. The team was awestruck. Just a feeling of victory that we were able to capture these,” said Aaron Stehura, one of the leads on the entry, landing and descent team. Two more images taken with a 20-megapixel camera show a wide shot of the landscape and a close-up of the rover’s front right wheel with rocks nearby. These are the first color images from the surface of Mars.

The rover, which is said to be in great shape after the intense landing, was launched from Cape Canaveral Florida, last July. Its mission is to search the ancient Martian environment for signs life once existed on the planet. The seven-month space voyage, officially named Mars 2020, has been nine years in the making. Just moments after its successful landing, the rover began snapping pictures from the surface of the alien lake it has landed on.
