United Airlines pledges to reduce 100% of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050
United Airlines pledged (10-Dec-2020) to reduce 100% of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
In order to reduce emissions, United will make a multimillion dollar investment in 1PointFive, a partnership between Oxy Low Carbon Ventures and Rusheen Capital Management that utilises atmospheric carbon capture technology (called Direct Air Capture) to physically remove CO2 from the air.

EU Mobility Strategy paves the way for Green Deal implementation but needs a vision on seaports as engines of growth and recovery
On 9 December, the European Commission released its new EU Mobility Strategy entitled “Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy – putting European Transport on track for the future”.
The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) welcomes the ambition of the Mobility Strategy to deliver the Green Deal transport target to reduce GHG emissions by 90% while also working towards zero pollution in the sector. ESPO fully supports the intention to make all transport modes sustainable and to shift towards more sustainable solutions. ESPO very much subscribes to the technology-neutral approach the Commission is pursuing.

The European Commission on 9 Deccember released its new EU Mobility Strategy entitled “Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy – putting European Transport on track for the future”.
The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) welcomes the ambition of the Mobility Strategy to deliver the Green Deal transport target to reduce GHG emissions by 90% while also working towards zero pollution in the sector.
Lack of support to renewable fuels will jeopardise transport decarbonisation and hamper climate-neutrality by 2050.
An accurate zero-emissions approach to mobility should consider the carbon footprint of the vehicles across their overall lifecycle.
Supporting expensive technologies that will not be affordable for many consumers any time soon will prevent equal access to clean mobility for all EU citizens.
The new Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy will not help the EU deliver the critical decarbonisation of transport. The transport sector releases today 20% of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions. A cost-effective and swift decarbonisation will be only feasible with the deployment of all renewable energies and technologies alike. In the clean mobility equation, all renewable alternative fuels and their corresponding technologies and infrastructures need equal support to drastically reduce emissions by 90% in 2050.

Easier planning and booking of air and train journeys, legally standardized emissions measurements, improved cross-border rail ticketing, financial protection for passengers against supplier failure and more taxation of aviation. All these developments could lie ahead for European business travelers following the Dec. 9 publication of the European Commission s Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, an action plan of 82 regulatory and other initiatives to guide its transport policy for the next four years.
The plan aims to keep European citizens moving while taking steps needed to achieve a 90 percent reduction in transport-related greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the Commission said. Today, transport accounts for a quarter of the EU s total greenhouse gas emissions and emissions have increased over recent years.
