More than 50 motorists a month are breaking down and getting stranded on a controversial stretch of smart motorway known as the gauntlet of death , figures reveal.
The 14-mile run of the M1 in South Yorkshire is at the centre of a police review after Jason Mercer and Alexandru Murgeanu were killed by a lorry in June 2019.
It comes as Highways England officials face criticism for allowing smart motorways to open across the country – including on stretches of the M1, the M25, the M5 and the M6 – before installing enough emergency refuge areas or detection technology which can quickly spot stranded cars.
