The second wave of Covid-19 infections is devastating religious communities in South Africa, with at least six elderly nuns dying last week from a religious congregation in one diocese alone.
“It is with great sadness and shock that we announce the death of six sisters from the Daughters of Saint Francis in Port Shepstone in Marianhill Diocese,” said a report from Sister Nkhensani Shibambu CSA, president of South Africa’s Leadership Conference of Consecrated Life.

We need sacramentality, he told more than 50 members of consecrated life gathered online for an Advent Day of Reflection Dec. 19. He also asked the women and men religious to pray for the increase of knowledge and acceptance of vaccines that are out there, noting members of his own African American community have real hesitations and mistrust of health professionals because of historical tragedies and mistreatments by the medical establishment.
Ninth KZN nun succumbs to Covid-19

Durban - A ninth nun at the Assisi Convent on the South Coast in KwaZulu-Natal succumbed to the second wave of Covid-19 on Monday morning.
The nuns, who are members of the congregation Daughters of St Francis of Assisi in Port Shepstone in the Diocese of Umzimkulu, contracted Covid-19 and died days after a celebration on December 8.
“There are sisters who were admitted to hospital on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The nun who was admitted on Saturday died this morning (Monday). Ten of the sisters are in quarantine in the community. We are all facing the same storm and it requires us to be vigilant in order to wade through these trying times,” said leader of the congregation, Sister Dominica Mkhize.

Religious congregations are being asked to be extra vigilant amid the second wave of Covid-19, following a religious gathering. The plea by The Leadership Conference of the Consecrated Life SA came after the virus claimed the lives of six nuns at a Catholic convent in Port Shepstone.
The elderly women from the Daughters of St Francis of Asisi Convent were aged between 75 and 88. According to officials, they passed away over the course of roughly the past week and a bit.
