Olympics Latest: Rashitov wins taekwondo gold at Tokyo Games The Latest on the Tokyo Olympics, which are taking place under heavy restrictions after a year’s delay because of the coronavirus pandemic: MEDAL ALERT Ulugbek Rashitov won Uzbekistan’s first Olympic taekwondo gold medal in dramatic fashion by beating Bradly Sinden of Britain. The 19-year-old Rashitov landed a four-point turning body kick inside the final 15 seconds to turn a two-point deficit into a two-point lead and the featherweight hung on for a 34-29 victory to claim Uzbekistan’s first-ever medal in taekwondo. Rashitov is relatively inexperienced on the world stage but his success echoes Uzbekistan’s major strides in combat sports, including the Uzbek boxing team’s breakthrough performance in Rio de Janeiro.

(AP) A Connecticut City Council member and landlord has been indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple election fraud charges, including allegedly forging the signatures of his tenants on absentee ballots so it would appear they had voted for him. Michael DeFilippo, 35, of Bridgeport pleaded not guilty Wednesday before a federal magistrate in New Haven. He was later released on a $250,000 bond. The charges stem from his run for the Bridgeport City Council in 2017 and 2018. A message was left seeking comment with the Democrat who represents the city s 133rd District. Bridgeport is the most populous city in Connecticut.

Five Assistant Principals Join Stamford Public Schools

Stamford Public Schools announced on Wednesday, July 28, the five new assistant principals are:  Sara Paolini, Hart Magnet Elementary School; Randy Bilik, Newfield Elementary School; Iuliana Roata, Stillmeadow Elementary School; Jillian Churchill, Cloonan Middle School; Robson de Andrade, Jr., Rippowam Middle School. Paolini fills the position recently vacated by the retirement of Mary Ann Mara, and Bilik fills the position vacated by the promotion of Sharon Longo to principal at Newfield.  The assistant principal positions at Stillmeadow, Cloonan, and Rippowam are the result of a recent budget reallocation, which replaced the former administrative intern positions at each of those schools with a certified assistant principal position.
