Serum Institute of India’s (SII) CEO Adar Poonawalla on Saturday, joined hundreds of healthcare workers in the country to get the first jab of the COVID-19 vaccine on the inaugural day of the world s biggest inoculation drive. Poonawalla posted a video of him taking the vaccine shot in Pune.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 16: The vaccination drive to combat COVID-19 began in Kerala on Saturday at 1,13,330 designated centres with prominent government doctors among the first batch of frontline workers to be administered the vaccine. It s a proud moment here in Kannur that the director of Malabar Cancer Centre, Dr Satheeshan Balasubramanyam became the first person in the district to receive the vaccine, State Health Minister KK Shailaja said.
Shailaja, who visited one of the centres in Kannur district, said such prominent persons will receive the vaccine at each district centre and in all 13,300 health care workers will be covered in a single day. Director of Health Service RL Saritha was given the vaccine shot in Thiruvananthapuram. Shailaja told reporters in Kannur that a committee headed by the Chief Secretary of the state was overseeing the drive.
Kathmandu: Nepal has approved the use of the Indian-made AstraZeneca vaccine Covishield in case of emergency to fight the coronavirus. According to a statement issued by the Department of Drug Administration of Nepal, the decision to sanction the vaccine was taken on Friday. About 1,950 people have died so far from the epidemic in Nepal.
According to the statement, Nepal has been given conditional approval for use in case of emergency of Covishield vaccine against coronavirus. The pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca is providing the vaccine to several medium and low-income countries other than the Government of India in partnership with the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII). The Serum Institute is the world s largest vaccine producer. During the sixth meeting of the India-Nepal Joint Commission, Nepal congratulated the Indian External Affairs Ministry for achieving success in developing Covishield and Covaxin and has urged Nepal to vaccinate at the earliest.

New Delhi, Jan 16: India on Saturday launched one of the world s biggest vaccination programmes with COVID vaccines manufactured in the country - one developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, the other by Bharat Biotech International with a state-run institute.
It is reportedly said that three crore health and other frontline workers, followed by about 27 crore older than 50 or considered high-risk would receive COVID-19 vaccine.
Covishield
Covishield is developed by the University of Oxford and British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India. This vaccine has emerged as the most promising vaccine for countries like India where cost and logistics are a significant consideration.
