India is all set to receive the 1st Covid-19 vaccine as the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) on Sunday has approved Oxford AstraZeneca’s CoviShield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin for restricted use in India. India is gearing up to begin the biggest vaccination drive for one nation in history. However, controversy has arisen over the name of the Pune-based Serum Institue of India’s vaccine. A civil court in Pune issued a notice to SII on the application of a pharmaceutical company and vendor.
This vaccine, prepared by Oxford University, has been named ‘Covishield’ but at the same time, Adar Poonawala’s company has received notice regarding the name of the vaccine. The notice requested the Serum Institute of India to stop using ‘Covishield’ trademarks or other similar names in its upcoming covid-19 vaccination. Kathmandu/ New Delhi, Jan. 6 Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Gyawali is all set to embark on his visit to New Delhi on January 14 to participate in the sixth meeting of the Nepal-India Joint Commission.
The two neighbours have already started exchanging the texts of at least a couple of memoranda of understanding expected to be signed during the Nepali minister s trip to the Indian capital. As one of the MoUs is related to cooperation in the health sector, some officials believe this could entail an agreement on the procurement of Covid vaccines from India.

New Delhi: India has moved a step closer to getting a coronavirus vaccine as two candidates - Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech s Covaxin and the Serum Institute of India s Covishield - have been recommended by a government-appointed panel to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for emergency use in the last two days. The country has been preparing for the vaccine rollout for the last four months, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Saturday as he reviewed the dry run in Delhi. An end-to-end mock drill on the vaccine administration was conducted in all the states and union territories on Saturday, an exercise compared by the Health Minister to holding elections. DCGI chief Dr Venugopal G Somani is expected to share details about the vaccine candidates today at 11 AM.
