This success was no small feat, as the more contagious variants account for over 90% of all cases in the province. Of the 34 health units in Ontario, our unit is one of only 14 that has reduced the per capita weekly cases since April 12. I want to thank everyone for their increased vigilance. As we welcome warmer temperatures, local vaccine efforts are ramping up to administer the anticipated increased deliveries in May. Locally, Dr. Paul and his team will have administered close to 60,000 doses by the weekend, surpassing the provincial average. He also reported that there are 57 local pharmacies approved to participate in the local program, but they can only be added when more supplies of the AstraZeneca vaccine are available.

Article content And, just under two weeks before his test, McDonell got the vaccine, the first shot, the Pfizer-BioNTech version. “Maybe that’s had an impact (in having less-severe symptoms),” said McDonell, who, after the vaccine, figured that in just over two weeks later, he’d have a pretty good shot of avoiding catching the virus altogether during the pandemic. But it played out differently. McDonell was in Toronto recently for two weeks, part of his government cohort, for work on the budget, and he got the positive test result several days ago. Looking back, McDonell suspects he likely acquired the virus during an elevator ride in Toronto. He said a gentleman in the elevator sneezed, which “was a bit annoying,” McDonell recounted, but didn’t think too much of it – at least until he got a positive test result.

After receiving my first dose of vaccine, I can tell you that I was particularly diligent in following the masking and distancing guidelines for the short two-plus week period required to achieve its protection, he says in a statement. The only situation I can recollect was waiting for an apartment elevator when someone masked in line inadvertently sneezed. I remember feeling uncomfortable, but it happens. Whether this was the point of contact, I can t say for sure, but I mention this only so that you may appreciate how little contact it takes for these new variants to spread and for the increased risk our essential workers and people in large urban areas face daily. While the short period of vaccination could not stop me from picking up the virus, I can credit it for the minor symptoms that I am experiencing that could easily be explained as the common cold.
