Witness Inconsistencies Hurt Defense Case By Mae Azango, New Narratives/Front Page Africa Justice Correspondent FREETOWN, Sierra Leone – After nearly three months the West African portion of the groundbreaking war crimes trial of Gibril Massaquoi by a Finnish court has come to an end.  The four judge panel, prosecution and defense lawyers wrapped up their work in Freetown on Tuesday after hearing from 19 defense witnesses here.  In the final days of the trial the case has come down to two crucial points: Could Mr. Massaquoi have left the safe house where he was under witness protection in Freetown as part of his role informing to the Special Court for Sierra Leone long enough to travel to Liberia to commit the 2003 war crimes he’s accused of? And were there other combatants using the alias “Angel Gabriel” who could have committed the alleged war crimes?

Police arrest man in Leeds on suspicion of Sierra Leone war crimes

21:00 EDT, 18 May 2021 A man has been arrested on suspicion of committing war crimes carried out during the civil war in Sierra Leone, police said. The Metropolitan Police said officers from its war crimes team had arrested a 42-year-old man at an address in Leeds on Tuesday on suspicion of offences contrary to section 51 of the International Criminal Court Act 2001. The force said the arrest was part of an ongoing investigation into alleged atrocities that occurred during the civil war in Sierra Leone between 1994 and 2000. A man has been arrested on suspicion of committing atrocities during the Sierra Leone civil war which left more than 120,000 dead

Officers carried out a search of the man s property and he was taken to a police station in the city. The 42-year-old was later released under investigation, the force added.
