To the editor: During Men’s Health Month, the Cancer Services Program (CSP) of Northeastern NY is urgently asking men to get screened for colorectal cancer. Men in New York state are diagnosed with colorectal cancer more than women. In fact, the rate of colorectal cancer is nearly 30% higher in men than women. Men are also more likely than women to die from the disease. This does not always have to be the case because screening may prevent colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer screening can find growths that can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening can also find cancer early when it may be easier to treat. There are several screening options, including take-home stool tests.

I have zero tolerance for those who accept lies over truth.
Like people who still believe Trump won the election and Biden cheated. It’s not just the Big-Lie pundits on MAGA television and radio, it includes 70% of Republicans. They also claim that the Jan. 6 insurrection was just a protest, or it didn’t happen.
Regarding the pandemic, about 50% of Republicans won’t take the COVID-19 vaccine, believing the virus is not real, it hasn’t been proven to work (Tucker Carlson) or simply because the Democrats want them to.

The Jefferson Awards recognize extraordinary service to the Capital Region community. (Special to the Times Union by Eric Jenks)Eric Jenks
Thirteen local people are being honored as finalists for the Jefferson award this year for their extraordinary service to the community.
For the second year in a row, the event will be virtual because of the pandemic. There will be no get-together where they will be feted.
From helping children diagnosed with cancer and their families to helping refugees navigate their way in their new country to collecting used musical instruments for schoolchildren who cannot afford to buy them to making beds for children who do not have them, these volunteers have spent countless hours pursuing causes to benefit others.
Unadilla Next Stop For Bassett Free Cancer Screening Coach
One of the great medical opportunities we are blessed to have in a rural area like ours, is the Bassett Hospital free medical screening coach through The Cancer Services Program of the Central Region. This laboratory on wheels, makes its round throughout Otsego, Delaware and Chenango counties on a regular basis. The coach brings a number of free screening opportunities to out-of-the-way communities and small towns and villages that may be to far from a Bassett medical facility for patients to conveniently travel to. The services are at no cost but you must make a reservation for an appointment.
