Report on foreign policy by Minister of Foreign Affairs Eva-Maria Liimets at the Parliament of Estonia
16. February 2021 - 11:09
Honourable Members of Parliament, dear guests,
In foreign policy, Estonia acts as a sovereign state to ensure that our interests are represented, our security is protected and our people’s lives improve. This year, we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the restoration of our independence and the centenary of establishing diplomatic relations with many of our allies and partners who have stood by us in good times and supported us at difficult moments. Together we belong to a space of values based on democracy, rule of law, free market economy, human dignity, the diversity of the cultures, identities and traditions of all peoples, freedom of speech and respect for human rights.
Desecrated Armenian Holocaust Memorial
Recently, it was reported that the âTo Live and Not Forgetâ Holocaust Memorial in Yerevan, Armenia was vandalized by local anti-Semites, who sprayed over the Hebrew inscriptions on the monument. The World Jewish Congress condemned the anti-Semitic vandalism: âIt is horrible to see that the Holocaust memorial in Yerevan, Armenia was vandalized with vile anti-Semitic graffiti. The vandalism was condemned by the cityâs mayor.â
Rabbi Zamir Isayev also tweeted: âWhat a disgrace! A monument to the victims of the Holocaust was once again desecrated in Yerevan. How can the Armenians justify the desecration of a Holocaust memorial by the fact that Israel sold weapons to Azerbaijan? Does this give someone the right to desecrate the memorial?â

Today 16 February, Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets presented a report on foreign policy at a sitting of the Parliament of Estonia (Riigikogu) focused on foreign policy, and outlined the main lines of action in Estonia’s foreign policy this year.
Given the increasingly tense international security situation, Estonia’s foreign policy is focused on security issues this year. “We must make an effort in our foreign policy to ensure that the Western world remains united and proactive and that we are unreservedly at its political core. It is important for our foreign policy actions to be focused on actively upholding the current international order,” Foreign Minister Liimets said.

“Unfortunately, hostile and anti-Semitic elements exploit the incapacity of social media platforms to spread their hate speech, undermining this cornerstone,” says Israel’s minister of Strategic Affairs.
The Israeli Ministries of Strategic Affairs and Diaspora Affairs on Wednesday presented a Knesset committee with an outline for a national response to hate speech online.
The outline was released at a special Knesset hearing of the Immigration, Absorption, and Diaspora Affairs Committee, chaired by MK Michal Cotler-Wunsh, which featured government officials and representatives of social media networks.
The committee’s primary focus was on urging social media companies to crack down on anti-Semitism on their platforms and enforce their policies against hate speech across the board, rather than selectively.
