SPD investigating shooting that left one man injured

By CARLA SLAVEY Commonwealth Journal Mar 3, 2021 Mar 3, 2021 The Somerset Police Department is investigating a shooting incident that took place around 2 p.m. Tuesday. No one was seriously injured in the incident, but it did result in the arrest of one man for possessing a firearm despite having a Domestic Violence Order against him prohibiting that. The incident took place at a Ringgold Road residence. According to the SPD, officers arrived on scene to find Rodney Stevens, 41, with a gunshot wound near his ankle. He told officers the wound came from Justin Walters, 22 of Somerset. Detective Larry Patterson learned that Walters and Stevens, who lives with Walters’ mother, got into a verbal altercation shortly after Walters arrived at the residence.

Glover appealing conviction

Roy Hoopie Glover A Science Hill man for whom a local jury recommended a 75-year sentence last year is appealing his case to the Kentucky Supreme Court. Roy Eugene Hoopie Glover, 30, was convicted in February 2020 of first-degree Assault, two counts of first-degree Wanton Endangerment charges, first-degree Fleeing or Evading Police (Vehicle), and Receiving Stolen Property at least $500 in value as enhanced by a second-degree Persistent Felony Offender (PFO) count. The case involved a high-speed pursuit that occurred in northern Pulaski County on September 25, 2018. During the course of that pursuit, Glover drove southbound in the northbound lanes of US 27, running one driver off the road, and struck Lieutenant Jon Williams of the Pulaski County Sheriff s Office after he and Kentucky State Police Trooper Richie Baxter had exited their cruisers on East Frog Hollow Road in an attempt to limit Glover s path and deploy spike strips.

Somerset man sentenced in child abuse case

Christopher D. Haynes A Somerset man who was accused along with his wife of abusing their grandson has been sentenced after pleading guilty to an amended charge. Christopher David Haynes was sentenced February 5 in Pulaski Circuit Court to four years in prison for second-degree Criminal Abuse. Haynes and his wife 55-year-old Lana Jane Haynes were jointly indicted in December 2019 on one count of first-degree Criminal Abuse of a Child 12 or Under. Both initially entered not guilty pleas to the charge, which stemmed from an investigation by the Somerset Police Department. SPD Captain Mike Correll reported at the time that the foster parents of a 10-month-old boy contacted police July 31, 2019, after the child s grandparents had returned him from a visitation. During the exchange, the Hayneses told the foster parents that the child may have bruises because another child hit the baby with a toy.
