Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students, school staff, administrators, and families overcame unexpected challenges at the end of one academic year and beginning of another. Decisions on distance learning and variations on this instructional model became some of the most newsworthy stories in education this year.
There were also some bright spots, including Class of 2020 high school graduation ceremonies, modified to fit the circumstances but allowing local schools and families to celebrate their graduates amid a difficult year.
Grass Valley School District campuses will return to a distance learning instructional format Monday, district superintendent Andrew Withers confirmed.
The district began the academic year with distance learning in August, and had opened its campuses for hybrid instruction districtwide Nov. 2.
Withers announced the decision Wednesday night in an email addressed to district staff, parents, and other community members.
The message referenced a recent increase in COVID-19 cases in Nevada County as documented by the county Coronavirus Dashboard, as well as the Greater Sacramento region falling under the threshold of 15% ICU availability this week, triggering a regional stay-at-home order applicable to Nevada County.

As you may know the Nevada County Coronavirus Dashboard has documented a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases and last week Governor Newsom released a new “Regional Stay at Home Order” which includes daily monitoring of the ICU bed capacity. Earlier today the ICU capacity within the Greater Sacramento Region reached the threshold requirements for implementing a Regional Stay at Home Order for Nevada County.
