A day before Ross Comcowich set cruise from New York to Florida with his 18-foot motorboat, the Hopkinton High senior received an email from his grandfather, Jerry Comcowich.
The Aug. 30 correspondence read: “Take good risks and don’t fear failure. Life will be an exciting adventure.”
It was his grandfather who, after all, planted the seed in Ross’ head to go on such an exciting aquatic adventure. His grandfather sailed from New York to Florida 66 years prior, and Ross planned to go on the same trip over the first two weeks of September this year.
At least until tragedy struck.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. â A single-vehicle rollover crash in Fort Pierce killed one person and injured two others Tuesday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred along the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Mile Marker 134. Two lanes of the interstate were temporarily closed following the incident while officers worked the scene.
According to FHP, the driver, a 36-year-old woman of Lake Worth Beach, lost control of the vehicle and began traveling across the southbound lanes onto the inside shoulder. The vehicle rolled over and hit a tree on its left side.

A 37-year-old male pedestrian struck by a car on Christmas night died from his injuries three hours later, Fort Pierce police said Saturday.
Just after 5 p.m. Friday, a Toyota Yaris driven Pedro Rivera, 23, of Fort Pierce, was southbound on North 25th Street at the intersection of Avenue Q with a green light when Joseph Haugabook walked out in front of the car as he attempted to cross, witnesses told police.
Haugabook walked against a do-not-cross warning, they said.
Haugabook was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center where he died from his injuries just before 8 p.m., police said.
