I realised that I needed to look after my wellbeing to function effectively as a leader

I am a community matron working in an acute setting leading an acute frailty unit. When the second wave of coronavirus hit, we were just settling in a new ward after moving from our previous ward to make way for the stroke services. The second wave brought immediate challenges for the team. Most of our admissions were Covid-19 positive and the cases were increasing by the day. The patients were very unwell with very high level care needs. It was a matter of time before the nurses started to be off sick due to Covid-19. This led to high levels of pressure among staff due to working in low numbers and at the same time trying to provide high-quality care. Their anxiety levels were also rising due to the ever-changing personal protective equipment guidelines.
