Researchers from Florida Atlantic University s College of Engineering and Computer Science have received a two-year $698,801 grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to test the effectiveness of various types of personal protection measures against airborne viral transmission. Building on their prior research, the project will result in experimentally verified computational strategies for mitigating airborne transmission of aerosolized droplets for a safe workplace environment.

Toilet flushing and microbe-containing aerosols: A study

Flushing a toilet can generate large quantities of microbe-containing aerosols depending on the design, water pressure or flushing power of the toilet. A variety of pathogens are usually found in stagnant water as well as in urine, feces and vomit. When dispersed widely through aerosolization, these pathogens can cause Ebola, norovirus that results in violent food poisoning, as well as COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2. Image by David Rinehart from Pixabay Respiratory droplets are the most prominent source of transmission for COVID-19, however, alternative routes may exist given the discovery of small numbers of viable viruses in urine and stool samples. Public restrooms are especially cause for concern for transmitting COVID-19 because they are relatively confined, experience heavy foot traffic and may not have adequate ventilation.

Covid-19 transmission: This is why you shouldn t linger in a public restroom

Panupon Pongeaim / EyeEm A team of scientists from Florida Atlantic University s College of Engineering and Computer Science has warned people against lingering in public restrooms. The scientists conducted a series of tests to investigate the spread of bacteria and disease-containing aerosols (tiny liquid particles) that are generated when flushing a toilet or urinal. Aerosols are typically generated when someone exhales, talks or coughs. But other studies found that breathing and singing also generated aerosols and that the particles could remain suspended in the air for longer periods of time.
