Memory biomarkers confirm aerobic exercise helps cognitive function in older adults

Memory biomarkers confirm aerobic exercise helps cognitive function in older adults ANI | Updated: Jun 14, 2021 09:31 IST Washington [US], June 14 (ANI): Until now, systemic biomarkers to measure exercise effects on brain function and that link to relevant metabolic responses were lacking. A recent study shows a memory biomarker, myokine Cathepsin B (CTSB), increased in older adults following a 26-week structured aerobic exercise training. The positive association between CTSB and cognition, and the substantial modulation of lipid metabolites implicated in dementia, support the beneficial effects of exercise training on brain function and brain health in asymptomatic individuals at risk for Alzheimer s. Increasing evidence shows that physical activity and exercise training may delay or prevent the onset of Alzheimer s disease (AD). In ageing humans, aerobic exercise training increases grey and white matter volume enhances blood flow and impr

Exercise Delays Onset of Alzheimer s Disease

Exercise Delays Onset of Alzheimer s Disease by Jayashree on  June 11, 2021 at 11:16 PM In old people aerobic exercise training increases gray and white matter volume, enhances blood flow and improves memory function so the ability of systemic biomarkers measuring exercise effects on brain function related to metabolomic alterations associated with risk for AD used for further prevention, monitoring, and treatment efforts. To address this issue, Henriette van Praag, Ph.D., from Florida Atlantic University s Schmidt College of Medicine and Brain Institute and Ozioma Okonkwo, Ph.D., Wisconsin Alzheimer s Disease Research Centre and Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and their collaborators, tested the hypotheses that three specific biomarkers implicated in learning and memory will increase in older adults following exercise correlated with cognition and metabolomics markers of brain health.

In aging humans, aerobic exercise training increases gray and white matter volume, enhances blood flow, and improves memory function. The ability to measure the effects of exercise on systemic biomarkers associated with risk for AD and relating them to key metabolomic alterations may further prevention, monitoring, and treatment efforts. However, systemic biomarkers that can measure exercise effects on brain function and that link to relevant metabolic responses are lacking.

Alarming rising trends in suicide by firearms in young Americans

Wood, M.D., senior author, interim dean and senior associate dean for education, Schmidt College of Medicine. view more  Credit: Florida Atlantic University Deaths from suicide are rising in the United States. These rising trends are especially alarming because global trends in suicide are on a downward trajectory. Moreover, in the U.S., the major mode of suicide among young Americans is by firearms. Researchers from Florida Atlantic University s Schmidt College of Medicine and collaborators explored trends in suicide by firearms in young white and black Americans (ages 5 to 24 years) from 1999 to 2018. FAU medical students awarded scholarships

FAU medical students awarded scholarships May 18, 2021 at 5:51 PM EDT - Updated May 18 at 5:51 PM Several medical students from Florida Atlantic University are about to take their next important step to advance their career. During this spring semester, Stephanie Byun, Isaiah Herrera, Alayna Kelly, and Faith Obimdike were awarded the T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society Scholarship from the Student National Medical Association. The scholarships also support the mission of Florida Atlantic University s Schmidt College of Medicine to address inequities in within the healthcare industry. Scripps Only Content 2021
