Dr. Salomon Melgen had served almost four of his 17-year prison term when President Donald Trump commuted his sentence. It s not unusual for presidents to issue a lot of pardons at the end of their presidency because controversial pardons can blowback on a president, Florida Atlantic University political science professor Kevin Wagner said.

Two of the most recognized names in the photonics sector set to join forces in $5.7BN deal.
Lumentum and Coherent, two of the biggest and best-known companies in photonics, have revealed plans to merge.
The move will see Lumentum acquire Coherent in a cash-plus-stock deal valuing the latter at $5.7Â billion - around a 50Â per cent premium on its recent stock-market valuation.
Describing the historic Coherent brand as a âcrown jewel of the laser industryâ, Lumentumâs CEO Alan Lowe told an investor conference call discussing the plan: âI canât wait to get the two teams together. Itâs an incredibly exciting day for all of us.â
