Businesses struggle to fill up low paying jobs in South Florida
DANIA BEACH, Fla. – Many businesses in South Florida are struggling to fill low-paying jobs. John Conlon hopes this is temporary. Once this changes, the Historic Dockers Restaurant in Dania Beach will be able to reopen.
Conlon said there were plenty of customers at the restaurant despite the coronavirus pandemic. The release of the COVID-19 vaccine increased consumer confidence. The challenge, he said, was in the back of the house.
“We needed five cooks; we had two. They were working 12 hours a day, almost seven days a week and at some point, they just can’t do it anymore,” Conlon said.
West Virginia will step up its prizes for vaccines, enrolling all residents who have received a coronavirus shot into a lottery for the chance to win a college scholarship, an F-150 pickup truck or cash rewards.

In South Florida, when people want to find a doctor who s Black, they often end up contacting Adrienne Hibbert through her online website, Black Doctors of South Florida. There are a lot of Black networks that are behind the scenes, says Hibbert, who runs her own marketing firm. I don t want them to be behind the scenes, so I m bringing it to the forefront.
Hibbert says she got the idea for the website after she gave birth to her son 15 years ago. Her obstetrician at the time was white, and the suburban hospital outside Miami didn t feel welcoming to her, as a Black woman pregnant with her first child.
