Cops searching for a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl on Tuesday found themselves in a standoff with the young Florida fugitives who broke into a home, armed themselves with powerful guns and opened fire on responding deputies, authorities said.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said a 14-year-old girl was shot and wounded when she pointed a shotgun at deputies after she and a 12-year-old boy were involved in a shootout.
The 12-year-old boy was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, deputies said. The boy put down his weapon and was not injured.
Deputies said the shootout originated from a report of two runaways from the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home. The 12-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl were reported missing shortly before 5 p.m.
Deputies said the boy is a diabetic and didn’t have his medication with him. It was also reported that the girl hit a staff member with a stick.
