Amid a debate about whether students should be required to take standardized tests in person as COVID-19 continues to spread, the state Department of Education is giving an additional two weeks for the Florida Standards Assessments and a statewide science test to be administered.

With testing season right around the corner, teachers have their work cut out for them as they try to prepare students for the all-important state assessments.
On Tuesday, the Sarasota County School Board will review diagnostic testing data that shows significantly more students are struggling this year than in previous years. And although some had hoped for a reprieve from the state tests, Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran issued an emergency order on Monday that expands the window for testing but affirms that it indeed will take place.
According to the School Board’s agenda:
The emergency order points to a “disproportionate numbers of educationally disadvantaged students learning off-campus or not attending school at all" due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“If the roof on your home in Florida is more than 10 years old, the cost to replace (it after a hurricane) could change dramatically if proposed legislation becomes law.”

âWeâre seeing the impact of winter break now,â said Seminole County school district spokesperson Michael Lawrence.
