Wastewater spill in Dunnellon; testing underway at site and beyond
DUNNELLON The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has announced that roughly 1,000 gallons of wastewater spilled Monday night from a City of Dunnellon lift station.
A technician received a call at 8:30 p.m. Monday about the leakage at 11730 Cherokee Drive, which is within the City of Dunnellon collection system.
State officials said that, in reviewing the area, it was discovered that the breakers for the main power panel had tripped, creating a power loss to the pumps. That led to a backup and what was described as a discharge from the collection system. It also disabled the emergency alarms.
Floridians evacuated from Piney Point area can now return home but the reservoir is still leaking By Li Cohen Toxic wastewater reservoir in Florida may collapse
Four days after being told to evacuate due to the threat of a leaking wastewater reservoir, hundreds of residents of Manatee County, Florida, were allowed to return home on Tuesday, officials announced. However, the Piney Point facility, which was previously used to mine phosphate, continues to leak.
Jacob Saur, the county s director of public safety, said Tuesday that the evacuation orders were lifted, effective immediately. Some road closures, however, will remain in place due to future concerns. The 137 people and their pets who were placed in non-congregate shelters will also be allowed to return home. U.S. 41 was also reopened in the area on Tuesday.
