FORT MYERS, Fla. – Environmental groups worry that releases from the Piney Point wastewater treatment facility near Tampa Bay will eventually fuel an algae bloom that could harm areas of coastal Florida.
Nutrient-rich waters from the treatment facility will offset natural balances in the coastal estuaries and eventually end up in the Gulf of Mexico, where red tide initiates.
“It does seem like if they pump that volume of water into Tampa Bay that it could very likely stimulate an algae bloom,” said John Cassani of the southwest Florida nonprofit organization Calusa Waterkeeper. “But they’re not telling us the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus. Usually you look at concentrations, and they’re not giving us that data.”

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection said that they found no evidence of a second breach at the 77-acre Piney Point reservoir in Manatee County, which has been leaking contaminated wastewater.
Last week, officials become concerned that the reservoir could burst, sending contaminated floodwater into surrounding neighborhoods. They ordered 300 people to evacuate from their homes and closed a nearby highway as a precaution.
The Piney Point reservoir was storing wastewater from an old phosphate plant. According to
Engineers have been working around the clock to contain the breach and pump the wastewater out of the reservoir. They have brought in dozens of pumps and ten vacuum trucks allowing them to remove 35 million gallons of water every day. The water is being pumped into the Tampa Bay estuary where officials are constantly testing water samples and working to ensure that algae blooms do not develop.

This screen grab of a leaking holding pond at the old Piney Point phosphate plant was taken from a drone feed to the Manatee County Emergency Operations Center on Saturday. That same day, authorities say, 35-year-old Chad Lynch of Riverview left several threatening voicemail messages regarding the Piney Point failure for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, prompting authorities to evacuate an FDEP office in Temple Terrace. Lynch was arrested on Monday on three charges including making a false report of a bomb, explosive device or weapon of mass destruction. [ VIDEOPHOTOG PRODUCTIONS | Times ]
