The one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine had been a route to quickly reach Florida’s more than 100,000 farmworkers before many begin heading north later this month. The state did not offer vaccines to these essential workers on a broad scale until Florida dropped its age limits for access earlier this month. In Immokalee, an agricultural hub in Southwest Florida, farmworker advocates and health workers reached thousands of farmworkers with one-dose vaccines in recent weeks. Still, other programs to reach underserved communities will continue. For instance, inmates at the Palm Beach County jail will continue to be vaccinated by swapping out the temporarily shelved vaccines for those manufactured by Pfizer, said Dr. Alina Alonso, director of Palm Beach County s state-run health department.
