FEMA-Supported COVID-19 Vaccination Site Opens in Orlando

The vaccination site is open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Valencia College West Campus. Federal staff from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Defense are supporting state and local agencies in administering the vaccine. Up to 2,000 vaccine doses will be administered at the vaccination site daily, according to a FEMA spokesperson. The site is also supplying 1,000 vaccines daily to two satellite sites in Orange County. By midday Wednesday, the site had only administered 500 of those doses, according to officials. The site only administered 1,800 vaccine doses in total that first day. People were getting in and out of the center in about 45 minutes.

School employees, police and firefighters over 50 in Florida now qualify for state and federal vaccination sites

State and federal vaccine sites on Wednesday will start vaccinating teachers, firefighters and police older than 50, according to Samantha Bequer with the Florida Division of Emergency Management. The vaccinations begin two days after Gov. Ron DeSantis opened the list of those who qualify for the COVID-19 vaccine to include the new categories. DeSantis signed an executive order Monday that added K-12 school employees, firefighters and sworn law enforcement officers over 50 to a list that already included people living in nursing homes and people over 65. The governor’s office later confirmed that the order applies to anyone who works for a public or private school, according to the Palm Beach Post. The list includes teachers aides, bus drivers, janitors, cafeteria workers, guidance counselors and school psychologists.
