Roughly 50 residents and 16 staff members received their first COVID-19 vaccination shots at Gracious Age Assisted Living in Sanford Friday.
SANFORD, Fla. - Roughly 50 residents and 16 staff members received their first COVID-19 vaccination shots at Gracious Age Assisted Living in Sanford Friday.
CDR Health, one of the contractors administering vaccines in Florida, gave them the heads up Thursday night. At first I was very skeptical because we got the cancellations and everything, said Gracious Age Assisted Living owner Carviz Carlos.

Why are Florida’s nursing homes employees opting not to be vaccinated?
Bottom Line: Earlier this week a CDC report shined a light on what appeared to be a surprisingly high number of nursing home and elder care workers who were opting not to become vaccinated. In the report, 51% of staffers were opting not to obtain the vaccine. While each state has crafted specific plans for vaccination priorities, nursing home and elder care workers have been prioritized in all of them, so this study wasn’t the byproduct of a small sample size. What’s more is a subsequent report from the Florida Division of Emergency Management showing Florida’s elder care professionals to be among the least likely of any in the country to obtain a vaccine. A remarkably low 36% of Florida’s nursing home and elder care professionals have opted to obtain the vaccine. All have now been offered one. The city of Sarasota has received preliminary approval for a mass vaccination clinic to be held at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, but details of when it will occur or how many doses will be available are not known now and may not be known for weeks.
The approval means that the city will get vaccine doses to hold its own clinic, apart from other state efforts already underway in the area.
With the initial go-ahead, the city now shifts to getting ready for when the time comes to hold the event – whenever that will be.
“What we’re doing now is moving into the final stages of preparation,” Sarasota Mayor Hagen Brody, who has spearheaded the effort to get the clinic to the city, said Friday.
