Archeologists looking at a former Clearwater cemetery said that they have found a total of 29 grave shafts during the excavation process.
Archeologists looking at a “forgotten” Clearwater cemetery say that they have found almost 30 grave shafts.
Archaeologists from the Florida Public Archaeology Network, based out of the University of South Florida, and Tampa engineering firm, Cardno Inc., provided a final update on the North Greenwood Cemetery excavation Friday.

They will do it through mechanical excavation, with a backhoe operator, to open up the ground.

CLEARWATER, Fla. â After years of speculation and questions we will finally know if graves are really under the old Palmetto Elementary school building.
âIâm glad. Itâs about time,â said Barbara Love.
Love is a member of the Clearwater Heights Remembrance Committee and the Clearwater Colored cemeteries committee. Both organizations, along with the NAACP and the school district joined forces so the land could be excavated.
âThere are bodies there. And itâs not right,â said Zebbie D. Atkinson IV.

Earl Levison (Student Affairs) were recently selected as recipients of the 2021 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Award presented by the FSU Division of Student Affairs and the Center for Leadership and Social Change. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Service Award was established in 1986 to honor a faculty member, administrator or staff member for their outstanding service in keeping with the principles and ideals of Dr. King. The honor also comes with a $1,000 stipend.
