Florida anti-riot bill moves closer to passage in House

With opponents shouting shame! and our voices are not heard, one of Gov. Ron DeSantis priority bills for 2021 moved another step closer to his desk Wednesday. The House Justice Appropriations Subcommittee OK d the contentious anti-riot legislation (HB 1) on a 10-5 party-line vote; progressives and other activists have labeled it  unconstitutional and even racist. Almost 70 speakers from groups around the state spoke against the bill, including some who urged the panel to kill this bill before it kills us. Two speakers were removed from the meeting by House sergeants-at-arms after violating rules of decorum, one for using profanity and another for not ending her remarks after the allotted one minute.
