The bill, passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature last month, is a large step in more than two decades of efforts by GOP leaders to offer vouchers to students. Among other things, the bill increases an income threshold to 375 percent of the federal poverty level, meaning a family of four making nearly $100,000 a year could qualify for vouchers.
Also, it strips away current restrictions, such as a requirement of previous enrollment in public schools before students can receive vouchers.
“This bill truly changes the educational landscape,” Nunez said. “It increases flexibility in the programs. It also allows for parents to have access to life-altering educational choices.”
Fresh Take Florida
Governor Ron DeSantis speaks during the AP Florida Legislative Planning Session on October 29, 2019 in Tallahassee, Florida.
TALLAHASSEE - Saying the state is blowing up “tired old narratives,” Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday signed a measure designed to lead to a major expansion of school vouchers.
DeSantis, during a ceremony at St. John the Apostle Catholic School in Hialeah, said the bill (HB 7045) will help provide educational choices to families who might otherwise struggle to pay private-school tuition.
“We will be doubling down on our commitment to supporting our working families and making sure they have the ability to get their kids into schools of their choices,” said DeSantis, who was flanked at the ceremony by Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez, lawmakers and other supporters.

Program Could Possibly Grow By 25 Percent Every Fiscal Year
Legislation in the Pennsylvania Senate would expand the commonwealth’s Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program, a tax-credit scholarship program for low-income students. The program’s budget would increase to $185 million in fiscal year 2020–21 and would allow the program to increase by 25 percent in every fiscal year where at least 90 percent of the total credits were distributed to commonwealth families.
Research also shows students at private schools are less likely than their public school peers to experience problems such as alcohol abuse, bullying, drug use, fighting, gang activity, racial tension, theft, vandalism, and weapon-based threats. There is also a strong causal link suggesting private school choice programs improve the mental health of participating students.

Program Open To Low-Income Arkansas Children
Legislation introduced in the Arkansas Senate would create the Philanthropic Investment in Arkansas Kids Program, a tax-credit scholarship (TCS) program for low-income Arkansas children. Tax-credit scholarship programs allow qualifying families to pay for tuition and fees at private and parochial schools, as well as at both a traditional public school or a public charter school located outside of the student’s school district, using scholarships provided by donors, who, in return, receive tax credits.

(The Center Square) â Floridaâs Republican-dominated Legislature will significantly expand the stateâs school choice voucher program before the 2021 legislative session concludes April 30.
Thatâs certain. What remains uncertain is how, exactly, they will do it with three weeks left before the proverbial hanky drop to sort through two slightly differing proposals now set to be debated on the House and Senate floors.
The House Appropriations Committee Thursday approved House Bill 7045 in a 20-5 vote, sending it to the House floor for a chamber vote, likely adoption and transmittal to the Senate, which has its own proposal awaiting review on the floor.
