Monthly Review | China: Imperialism or Semi-Periphery?

Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism, Lenin defined the five “basic features” of imperialism: (1) the concentration of production and capital developed to such a high stage that it created monopolies which play a decisive role in economic life; (2) the merging of banking capital with industrial capital, and the creation, on the basis of this “finance capital,” of a financial oligarchy; (3) the export of capital as distinguished from the export of commodities acquires exceptional importance; (4) the formation of international monopolist capitalist associations which share the world among themselves, and (5) the territorial division of the whole world among the biggest capitalist powers is completed.

Five Asian Countries Account for 80 Percent of New Coal Power Stations

SONNY TUMBELAKA/AFP via Getty Images 30 Jun 2021 Five Asian nations account for 80 percent of the world’s newly planned coal power stations, according to a report published by the non-profit climate research think tank Carbon Tracker on Wednesday. “China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Japan are responsible for 80 percent of the world’s planned new coal plants and 75 percent of existing coal capacity,” Carbon Tracker wrote. “In these five countries, 92 percent of planned coal units will be uneconomic, even under business as usual, and up to $150 billion could be wasted.” China, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, and Japan currently plan to build over 600 new coal plants between them, according to the report. The planned power stations are expected to generate “a total of 300 gigawatts of energy equivalent to around the entire electricity generating capacity of Japan,” Agence France-Presse (AFP) noted on June 30. The Asia-Pacific region consumed more than three-quarters o

Uzbekistan pins hopes on major new gas project

Uzbekistan pins hopes on major new gas project May 27, 2021 1:00:pm Summary by: Joseph Murphy Posted in: Uzbekistan pins hopes on major new gas project Uzbekistan has been a major natural gas producer for many decades. And while some of its largest fields are now past their prime, the country still holds some 1.2 trillion m 3 in proven reserves, according to BP’s latest Statistical Review of World Energy. The government is eager to capitalise more on this resource, by implementing reforms and attracting more foreign investment to maximise gas recovery. The Central Asian state produces around 60bn m 3 of gas each year, ranking it as one of the of 20 global gas producers. Around a quarter of this gas is exported, primarily to China, while the rest is consumed domestically. Though Uzbekistan’s basins are mature, new investors continue to enter the country, and a number of new projects are in the pipeline.

MEED | Nurturing a better energy future

Students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels should have the opportunity to engage with industry to focus their efforts and project work on developing solutions for real-world energy problems. University programmes such as Heriot-Watt University Dubai’s master s of science degree in global sustainability engineering can help support students in bridging the gap between raw innovation and marketable products and processes. Research programmes are also an effective mechanism to collaborate and convert knowledge from the laboratory into real-life industrial applications. Universities can also play a significant role in supporting students and burgeoning enterprises on the entrepreneurial journey, by providing enterprise centres and innovation hubs where technical and business expertise is offered outside of the traditional curricula.
