Park County School District #6 has confirmed that two staff members tested positive, but there is “no intention of going back” to mandatory masks in Cody.
Park County School District #6 Superintendent Peg Monteith confirmed that two staff at Cody Middle School tested positive for COVID-19. Their positions in the school have not been disclosed.
These cases come only two weeks after all Cody schools got permission from the state to go maskless. All students in the district have been attending classes without masks since late April.
On Tuesday, April 20, the Cody school board voted unanimously to request the variance. Park County Public Health Officer Dr. Aaron Billin submitted the variance request to the Wyoming Department of Health on April 22, which approved it the next day.

A new Cody nonprofit is hoping to raise money in support of firearms training for school employees.
Bill Tallen, retired federal law enforcement officer, and Woody Wilkerson, Park Six Sentinels board member, discussed the group Wednesday morning on KODI’s “Speak Your Piece with Darian Dudrick.”
The goal of the Sentinels, a 501(c)(3), is to cover the expenses for school employees during their second year of firearms training and beyond.
The Cody School Board first approved Policy CKA in April 2018 and again during a two-year review in 2020. The rule allows any district employee – except bus drivers – to carry a concealed firearm on school property only after he or she passes a background check, psychological exam and rigorous firearms training, and then is approved by the board.

The State of Wyoming approved a mask variance for all Cody schools – but students, staff, and visitors still need to wear masks in certain spaces and places.
Cody students and teachers can now choose to go to class without a mask. Park County Public Health Officer Dr. Aaron Billin announced the variance, requested by the Park County School District #6 Board of Trustees, was approved by the state on Friday, April 23.
“The School Board of Park County School District #6 has requested an exception to State Public Health Order #1 that allows PCSD #6 to make mask-wearing in school OPTIONAL. At the request of the School Board – this applies to mask use during the school day in school buildings and classroom settings and not to sporting events and other activities such as band concerts.”

After months of discussion and bidding, the Cody school district unanimously voted to accept a sizeable bid for the 20th Street building and property.
The Park County School District #6 April 20 board meeting was full of potent topics. Much of the discussion centered around voting to request a mask variance for all K-12 schools in Cody, which unanimously passed.
But the Board of Trustees brought another issue to a close that evening. A bid for the old bus barn on 20th Street was discussed and accepted during the same board meeting.
Since the construction of the new facility at 3825 Sheridan Avenue, the district has been hoping to sell the old bus barn. The board ultimately decided to put the building and property up for bid, hoping for a quick sell.
