Because the items were stolen, Long’s death was initially considered a crime of opportunity until Tuesday.
Authorities have not said what led them to reclassify the killing as a hate crime, but Park County Sheriff Tom McGraw said the change will allow more resources to be put toward the case.

Authorities believe at least three men, and possibly a fourth suspect, are responsible for Long s death. Authorities said the suspects might have been injured in the fire and might have since changed their appearances, sold their vehicles and/or moved away.

After nearly 40 years, a Colorado man has been arrested in connection with the slayings of two young women, who authorities believe were hitchhiking just before they were murdered in 1982.
Alan Phillips was being held on Thursday in in Park County Jail on suspicion of killing Annette Schnee, 21, and 29-year-old Barbara “Bobbi Jo” Oberholtzer. He was identified as a a potential suspect using DNA testing, but authorities have not yet revealed a motive in the killings nor his connection to the victims.
The 70 year-old, from the the mountain hamlet of Dumont, was taken into custody on February 24 near his home in Clear Creek County, Park County Sheriff Tom McGraw told reporters during a news conference on Wednesday. He’s facing charges including first-degree murder, kidnapping and assault.
